A man-portable guided missile launcher for DayZ. Turn on the IR seeker, hold a running vehicle in the sights until it locks, and fire. The missile steers itself onto the target. Vehicle drivers fight back with countermeasure flares.

  • IR seeker that locks onto running cars and helicopters, and onto boats.
  • Lock time that changes with the shot. Shooting at the exhaust from behind, up close and in clear weather locks fast. Head-on, at long range or in rain and fog it's slow.
  • Phosphor eyepiece HUD, 2x when aiming: seeker state, lock progress, rangefinder, seeker battery and a signal-quality readout, with brackets on the tracked vehicle.
  • Guided missile that speeds up to 180 m/s and steers up to 120° a second.
  • Hits wreck vehicles. A hit on the locked target damages its hull, engine and fuel tank, and the blast hurts anyone nearby.
  • Missile warning. Everyone in a targeted car or heli hears a warning tone and sees ! MISSILE !.
  • Countermeasure flares. The driver fires a salvo, and every flare near the vehicle has a chance to pull the missile off.
  • Single-use tubes (on by default): a launcher is spent after one shot.

The numbers on this page are the defaults. Servers can change most of them.

Items

Item What it is
GROM-M Launcher 6x3, 9 kg. Holds one missile. Takes a 9V battery that powers the seeker
GROM-M Missile 3x1, 10 kg. Loads into the launcher like a round into a single-shot gun
9V battery Vanilla. Powers the seeker for about 60 seconds

The launcher repairs with a Weapon Cleaning Kit, unless it's ruined.

Getting started

  1. Attach a 9V battery to the launcher and load a GROM-M Missile.
  2. Take the launcher in your hands and aim down the sights. The HUD appears and the view zooms to 2x.
  3. Press L to turn the seeker on. It plays a searching tone.
  4. Put the crosshair on a vehicle with its engine running. Brackets appear around it and the lock bar fills.
  5. Keep it in the sights until the HUD flashes LOCKED and the tone changes.
  6. Fire.

Firing without a lock wastes the missile: it flops out of the tube unguided and lands nearby.

Controls

The keys can be rebound in the game's controls settings, under Demo GROM-M. The default keys (L and C) also keep working after you rebind them.

Action Key
Seeker on / off L
Deploy countermeasure flares (driver only) C

The seeker

What it can lock

  • Cars and helicopters with the engine running. A vehicle with its engine off gives off no heat, and the seeker can't see it.
  • Boats, engine on or off.
  • Only the vehicles the server allows. Some servers limit it to certain types.
  • Never players, animals, infected or items.

To start a lock, the crosshair must sit on the vehicle itself, within 800 m, with nothing in the way. After that it holds on as long as the vehicle stays within 12° of the crosshair, in range, in sight and running.

Seeker states

HUD Means
SEEKER OFF The seeker is off. The hint line says what's missing, or PRESS [L] TO UNCAGE SEEKER
SEEK On and searching. Aim at a running vehicle
TRACKING A vehicle is in the brackets and the lock bar is filling
LOCKED (flashing) Ready to fire
  • The seeker only works while you aim down the sights. Lowering the launcher drops any track, but the seeker stays on and keeps using the battery.
  • Putting the launcher away, dropping it, going unconscious or dying turns the seeker off.
  • Firing turns the seeker off. The next shot needs a fresh L and a new lock.
  • The seeker won't turn on without a missile loaded or with a flat battery.

Lock time

A lock takes 2 to 10 seconds, depending on three things that the seeker checks constantly:

  • Aspect. From behind, the seeker looks into the exhaust and locks fastest. Head-on takes three times as long. It goes by which way the vehicle's nose points, not which way it's moving.
  • Range. A target at 800 m takes more than twice as long as one up close.
  • Weather. Rain and fog block infrared. Full rain doubles the lock time, full fog multiplies it by 2.5, and both together by 3.5.

If the target turns away or closes in partway through, the bar speeds up. If it turns toward you, it slows down.

Shot (clear weather) Lock time
Any aspect, up close about 2 s
Side-on, 400 m about 2.5 s
Head-on, 800 m about 5.5 s
Head-on, 800 m, heavy rain and fog 10 s

SIG on the HUD shows how good the shot is: 100 means the fastest possible lock and 0 the slowest. It shows while a vehicle is tracked.

Battery

The seeker drains its 9V while it's on, whether or not you're aiming. A full battery lasts about 60 seconds. BAT on the HUD shows the charge, dimmed below 50% and flashing below 20%. When it runs out, the seeker switches off. Turn it off with L between targets to save charge.

The HUD

  • Centre: crosshair. Normal while searching, bright while tracking, flashing when locked.
  • Around the target: corner brackets sized to the vehicle, with its range above them.
  • Readouts: seeker state, hint line, lock bar, RNG (range to the target, or to whatever the crosshair is on), BAT (seeker battery %) and SIG (shot quality).

The missile

  • Leaves the tube at 40 m/s and speeds up to 180 m/s (650 km/h) in about 2.3 seconds.
  • Steers up to 120° a second onto the target. It reaches a stationary target at 400 m in about 3 seconds and at 800 m in just over 5.
  • It arms after half a second. It goes off within 5 m of the target, on hitting anything, on touching the ground, or after 30 seconds in the air.
  • Direct hit: going off within 8 m of the locked target does 3000 damage to the target's overall health, and the same to its engine and fuel tank.
  • Blast: like a grenade, out to about 12 m. It hurts players and loot near the impact, the target's crew included.
  • A missile pulled off by a flare does no direct-hit damage. Its blast still hurts whatever is near the flare.

Single-use launchers

On most servers the launcher is spent after one shot: firing, locked or not, ruins it, and it can't be reloaded or repaired. Some servers turn this off, and then the launcher can be reloaded with another missile.

Flares and the missile warning

Missile warning

When a missile is guiding onto your car or heli, everyone inside, in any seat, hears a warning tone and sees a flashing ! MISSILE ! with C - DEPLOY FLARES. It stops when the missile goes off or a flare pulls it away. That's how you know the flares worked.

Deploying flares

  • The driver presses C. The vehicle throws a salvo of 4 flares up and outwards. They arc down and burn for 8 seconds.
  • A new salvo can be fired every 8 seconds.
  • Each flare gets one chance per missile (10%) to pull it off, the first time it's within 60 m of the vehicle the missile is chasing. One salvo with all four flares close to the vehicle gives about a one-in-three chance. More salvos give more chances.
  • A pulled-off missile chases the flare for the rest of its flight.

Troubleshooting

HUD hint What to do
LOAD A MISSILE Load a GROM-M Missile into the launcher
INSERT A 9V BATTERY Attach a 9V battery to the launcher
BATTERY DEAD - REPLACE 9V Swap the 9V for a charged one
PRESS [L] TO UNCAGE (KEY UNBOUND IN CONTROLS) Bind GROM Seeker On/Off in the controls settings. L still works
AIM AT A RUNNING VEHICLE The seeker is on. Put the crosshair on a vehicle
  • No HUD: aim down the sights. The HUD only shows while aiming.
  • The seeker won't track a vehicle: its engine is off, it's over 800 m away, something is in the way, or the server doesn't allow that type.
  • The lock keeps dropping: keep the vehicle within 12° of the crosshair and in clear sight. Trees and buildings break the lock.
  • Fired and nothing happened: you fired without a lock. On a single-use server, that launcher is spent.
  • C does nothing: only the driver can fire flares, the last salvo was under 8 seconds ago, or the vehicle can't be targeted, so it carries no flares.
